WORD OF THE DAY
Snjohus doesn’t have a lot of content at the moment as almost all of our products are either on the drawing board or under development. One service that has been implemented though is the Word of the Day mailing list. One of Snjohus’ founders (Ágúst) is a language geek and thought it would be cool to increase the world’s awareness of Icelandic (and German) by offering a free “Word of the Day” mailing list service. A unique Icelandic word (and German if you sign up for the German Word of the Day mailing list) is sent out to all participants on the list along with its English translation and examples of use.
Snjohus’ Word of the day Mailing list was started as an effort of mine to help my foreign colleagues at a computer game company in Iceland to learn more of the language. With time the list grew until it became quite unmanageable. This is why the process has now been digitalized and automated. I still have to pick the word and the examples but the rest of the process has been coded away, leaving only the interesting parts of picking words and examples.
