Frico - The Free Icon Maker

AN APP THAT CREATES ICO FILES FOR FREE
When creating software, I inevitably end up needing to create an icon (.ico file) for it. It’s a recurring problem and I never seem to be able to find a program I like for this particular task. The programs I do find are either too complicated (do you really want to edit the pixels in your icon generator app?) or too limited and I haven’t really seen one that’s free either.

That’s why I decided to create an icon creator of my own and named it Frico. My goal was to make something super simple and easy to use that would be able to create icons that look good at different icon size settings and include transparency.

Here’s how Frico works; You simply start the program, open a picture file (any jpg, bmp, png or gif will do). The program will show you a preview of the different icon sizes. You then simply hit the "Save" button and the program creates an icon that contains all the usual sizes you get when changing the icon sizes in the file explorer (from 256x256 down to 16x16).

The program is able to preserve transparency and it smoothly resizes pictures to fit the specific icon sizes.

Here’s a screen-shot:

ps. If you really want me to make a Windows XP version of this program then please drop me a line.

ONLINE SUPPORT FOR FRICO
Frico is a free icon generator tool. It can create Windows and Mac OS X icons from png, gif, jpg and bmp pictures. The icons generated with Frico are smooth and contain opacity information. Frico can create Windows icons ranging in size from 256x256 pixels to 16x16 pixels. The Mac icons size range is from 512x512 pixels to 16x16 pixels.

When you open Frico you will see a series of differently sized gray boxes. These are the icon preview boxes. To create a Windows icon, select the "Windows Icon" option (below the "Load File" button). If you are creating a Mac OS X icon, select the "Mac Icon" option.

You have 3 options when it comes to creating icons:

1) Create one icon in all the different sizes from a common image. To do this click the "Load File" button and select the file you are interested in. You can also drag and drop an image file anywhere inside empty space on the Frico window. The bigger the image file, the better. It’s better to size down than to size up.

2) Pick specific sizes. You can do this in two ways; you can either drag the file you are interested in on top of a size box or you can click the "Load" link that is located below each box.

Once you have filled at least one of the image boxes with an image, you simply press the "Save" button that appears at the bottom of the window.

Command line option:

Frico can also be used from the command line, here are the parameters:
win (create a Windows icon)
mac (create a Mac OS X icon)
out="path\to\output\file" (Path to the generated icon file)
"path\to\common\source" (Path to the common source image file for all sizes)
[16 - 512]="path\to\specific\size\file" (Path to an image file of a specific size).

To create a Windows ico file in all sizes from a common image file you’d enter this:
Frico win "c:\temp\source.png" out="c:\temp\icon.ico"

To create a Mac OS X icns file that only has sizes 128 and 16 you’d enter this:
Frico mac 128="c:\temp\source128.jpg" 16="c:\temp\source16.gif" out="c:\temp\icon.icns"

HELP KIDS LEARN MULTIPLICATION WITH MULTIPLY LEARN FROM SNJÓHÚS
Snjóhús introduces MultiPly Learn, a program that helps kids learn the multiplication tables.

Once installed, MultiPly will open up when your kids log on to the computer and ask them multiplication questions. Once the questions have been answered it closes and your kids can use the computer.

You can define how many questions are asked each time, and how often each multiplication table should be repeated. Once all the tables have been learned, MultiPly will ask random questions from multiplication tables 1 to 9.

You as a parent can enter a special parental password which you can use to exit the program quickly or you can exclude a specific user (your own user account) and MultiPly will not show up on that account.

Learning a new language? Ofo can help

AN APP THAT HELPS YOU TRAIN VOCABULARY
I’ve always been interested in helping people learn Icelandic so it occured to me a while ago to create a simple program that would help people remember and learn new words. That program was a normal Windows program and looked a little gray and drab. Later it occured to me that this little program would be excellent on the go on one of the smart phones available.

The app is designed for the iPhone. It lets you add any combination of words (consisting of vocabulary word and its translation) so you are not limited to a single language. The program does not come with any vocabulary words, the user enters the words he or she is studying into the app. Once the user has entered enough words (a minimum of 5 to start training) training can start.

There are currently 4 different training methods:

Go till I burst: Continues to quiz you until you decide to stop.

Take me for a spin: You enter the number of questions you want to answer. Ofo stops and displays the summary once you’ve answered the amount of questions you entered.

On the Clock: You pick a specific time for each question. If you run out of time, it counts as a wrong answer.

Punish me: You enter the grade (percentage of correct answers) you want to attain. You also have to provide a minimum number of questions the program will ask you before starting to check if you have reached the grade you entered. The user must keep in mind that the more wrong answers he or she enters, the harder it gets to reach the grade goal which was set and that is the reason why this mode is called the punish mode.

Each correct answer gives you points. If you collect enough points you’ll get a more impressive star. The score you get depends on how many correct answers you’ve made in a row but be careful, the penalty for an incorrect answer, the risk, increases by even more the more correct answers you make in a row.
